Kindle DX Review – Advantage and Disadvantage

If you’re an avid reader, I’m sure you’ve heard about the Kindle. I’ll never forget the first time I saw one. I couldn’t believe such a tiny device was capable of carrying over 3,000 books. I don’t think I’ve even read that many in my life. While I originally didn’t give this device much thought, I finally broke down and bought one and I’ve never been happier. The Kindle DX puts a whole new spin on the Kindle, allowing you to read magazines and view pictures much clearer than ever before. Is it possible color could be in the Kindle’s future?

The new E-Ink screen is absolutely stunning. The contrast has increased by 50% and this is obvious from the moment you lay eyes on the Kindle DX. It’s amazing how clear pictures are on this version. I’m very excited to set up some magazine subscriptions! Of course, as before, you have the unlimited access to wireless 3G internet for free. I must say, it’s nice to have the web as you’re reading because if you think of something (say, about an author that you want to look up); you can do all of that from your book, basically. As with previous generations, this one also comes with the no-glare screen which I am in love with. As much as I wanted a Nook in the past, you can’t get any better than a screen that looks like a real book. Nothing else out there compares.

Now, keep in mind that the Kindle internet is not very fast. This device is still experimenting with the web and using feedback from customers to see where they should take it next. I wouldn’t advice using it for anything too complicated or important because it’s going to take some time for the pages to load and such. You can’t watch videos at this time. While this version is great for people who read newspapers, it is very awkward to hold on to. It’s almost too big. I would recommend this for someone who is a major fan of newspapers or magazines because they would really enjoy the size of the screen.

If you’re strictly going to be reading books; go with a smaller version because it’s more comfortable to hold and not as bulky. I carry my Kindle3 in my jacket pocket; I don’t think that would be possible with the DX. The company went ahead and combined some keys, removing an entire row. While that looks nice, it makes navigating very tough and strange. I personally feel it would be better to have left it how it was before. Also, there are no folders. This has been a major complaint from customers who are looking for more organization on their Kindle.

This Kindle DX is a great device, the internet has gotten better, the pictures are clearer but it’s a bit bulky. If you need the larger screen; then this is the correct Kindle for you. Otherwise, stick with the Kindle3 for now.
