PCI compliance refers to data security standards and has existed for several decades. PCI compliance standards were initiated when the major credit card companies organized an independent council to define and oversee the standards for cardholder data security. Although PCI compliance has been around for a period of time new technologies and the growth of ecommerce have somewhat changed the way the standards are being met within an organization.

PCI Compliance Defined

PCI compliance is achieved when merchants and organizations responsible for handling and storing credit card data use the necessary measures to meet the standards set forth by the PCI Standards Security Council. PCI stands for Payment Card Industry and the standards are known as the Data Security Standards or PCI DSS.

PCI standards are cardholder data security standards which are uniform standards worldwide and apply to any merchant or organization that processes credit card payments or stores cardholder data. The standards protect both the merchant and the consumer against data breaches and credit card fraud.

Varied Definitions of the Cloud

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards were established long before the inception of cloud computing. Now that cloud computing has taken off in recent years it leaves a lot of questions unanswered in terms of PCI compliance and how merchants can meet the standards implemented by the PCI Security Standards Council.

If you ask different cloud computing providers to provide you with a definition of “the cloud” you will receive a different answer from each vendor that you ask. This means that the question of PCI compliance is rooted in the fact that everyone has their own definition of what the cloud really is. The varied definitions raise concerns and questions when coming to a conclusion in terms of PCI Data Security Standards and applying them to cloud computing.

The reality is that PCI Data Security Standards can be applied to cloud computing as it currently stands. For example, if you use a third party cloud computing provider to process credit card payments and store cardholder data, PCI Data Security Standards apply to the type of service models that are being used by the cloud computing provider.

When it comes to PCI compliance it all comes down to how cloud computing is implemented. Regardless if the company chooses to manage payment processing onsite or they choose a cloud computing service provider, the type of technology that is used for payment processing and storing cardholder data will determine the standards that must be met to achieve PCI compliance.

For example, if the company or cloud computing service provider uses virtualization as the model for implementation this type of environment does not require a network and instead relies on connectivity between servers with a service such as VMware. A Qualified Security Assessor that evaluates the infrastructure for PCI compliance would examine the connections that are placed between the servers to determine if they comply with PCI Data Security Standards. While the virtualized servers may comply the connections may or may not be in PCI compliance.

Popularity of Cloud Networks

Cloud networks are growing in popularity due to the benefits of reducing IT infrastructure costs and the costs associated with achieving and maintaining PCI compliance. When companies use PCI compliance with cloud computing the risks and liabilities on the part of the company are shifted to the cloud service provider.
In terms of the risks of PCI compliance in the cloud, there has been discussion around the susceptibility of the cloud to hacker exploits. The interesting point about this is that the cloud is essentially an existing server environment except that it has been virtualized as opposed to being in a data center. The bottom line is that it is still the same environment regardless of whether it is located in a data center or managed in the cloud by a cloud service provider.

Management Responsibilities of a Cloud Network

Typically, the cloud network is managed by the cloud services provider who provides the architectural foundation for implementation. The method of implementation is what determines the standards which must be met for PCI compliance.

If you work with a cloud services provider for payment processing and cardholder data security and storage, they will probably be hesitate to reveal their method of implementation and may view it as disclosing a trade secret. This means that you must insist on disclosure before you sign on the dotted line. If your cloud service provider is not PCI compliant, then it will be necessary for you to find one that has achieved and maintained PCI compliance for an extended period of time. After all, as a merchant, your customer’s security and brand reputation are at stake, not to mention the financial burden that can result from a data breach.

There are different kinds of operating system to choose from that you may find it difficult to choose the right one. Choosing the right OS depends on your needs as a computer user. However, no matter what kind of needs you have, you will find Ubuntu an efficient and flexible OS that will meet all of your needs.

Ubuntu is a Linux-based system which you can download for free, just like most systems that are built on Linux. You read it right. You do not need to purchase the OS because you can download it for free. People who are using Linux-based systems will surely try Ubuntu because they know that these systems offer a lot of benefits. One of the benefits of using Ubuntu is flexibility. Just how flexible is Ubuntu, you may ask. You can read more information about Ubuntu in the next few paragraphs.

Ubuntu is an Open Source Product

This is one of the main benefits of Ubuntu. It is an open source system that provides community support. This means that if you have questions about the different processes involving Ubuntu and if there are bugs and viruses that you wish to track and remove, you can always use Ubuntu’s community support. Users and developers alike can help you with your questions. This is what makes Ubuntu different from other OS. The users and developers have a special relationship that allows them to help each other by providing useful information and ideas. If you are an Ubuntu user, you can surely learn a lot from other users and its developers.

Users and developers share information via mailing lists and a special website or wiki that allows them to add, delete, and modify data from the website. This gives the users a sense of belongingness and importance because they feel as if they are also a part of the Ubuntu team.

Ubuntu’s Upgrade System is Easy and Convenient

People who use computers know that there are regular updates that they need to do for their computers to keep them in tiptop shape. Upgrading is not only a tedious process but can also be very expensive. Aside from this, updating your OS can give you problems with compatibility, which will take you weeks to resolve. After all, you do not want to remove your old files and data just because you have upgraded your computer. With Ubuntu, this is not a problem because once you update Ubuntu, every single one of your software, file, and script will also be updated to make them compatible with your OS. This is automatically done which means that you do not need to spend time to find all the files that you wish to convert to make it compatible to your newly updated OS. Upon updating, it will automatically fix bugs and install latest features.

Your Personal Settings Portable with Ubuntu

If you are using Ubutu Linux, all of your personal settings are saved in only one folder, your Home folder. This means that you can easily copy your settings using a USB drive so that you can use it on another computer. You do not need to change the settings of the new computer that suits your needs because everything is in the Home folder. This system also makes it easier to retrieve files and data from an old backup. You can also save your personal settings in Windows but they are saved in different folders—some are in your Home folder while others are in the Registry folder. This makes it more difficult and time consuming to copy your personal settings from one computer to another because you need to copy them from separate folders.

Ubuntu Allows You to Customize Your Desktop

Windows also has this feature wherein you can change wallpapers, backgrounds, or skins on your desktop or install other features that will make your desktop more cool and personal. Ubuntu takes this one step further. If you are using Linux, you can choose your preferred desktop environment, special effects, theme, icon theme, GTK engine, file system browser, and window manager that makes your desktop more personal. This makes your desktop more unique. In fact, if you look at the desktops of other Ubuntu users, you will see that no two desktops look the same.

DLL files are files that are important to running computer applications and general computing tasks. DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library which is a library of executable data which is used to launch an application in the Windows operating system. DLL files are shared by more than one application as opposed to each application having its own file and they play a significant role in computer system performance.

Although Dynamic Link Library files are a critical part of your PC’s operation, DLL errors in these file occur from normal computer usage and due to a variety of different reasons. If you use your computer frequently, you have probably experienced a DLL error message on your computer screen at one point or another. DLL errors can be many due to the number of DLL files which inhabit your PC. The errors can occur as the result of files that have become corrupt, a malware or virus infection, program installation, registry problems, or problems with the hard drive, to name a few things.

If you are frustrated by a DLL error, here are a few effective tips on how to fix a DLL error when it occurs in your PC.

Clean the Computer Registry

The registry is vital to the proper functioning of your PC and contains the very core of important files which are necessary for running programs and applications. The easiest way to solve a DLL error is to use a registry cleaner from a company that is reputable and trustworthy.

When you deploying a good registry cleaner, it will clean your computer’s registry and repair any files that are broken or have become corrupt. A registry cleaner will also remove any unnecessary files which are leftover from uninstalling programs and place your computer back in proper working order. Since DLL errors can be caused by computer registry problems this method may take care of the issue as well as improve your PC’s system performance.

Unregister a DLL File

In order to work around a DLL error you may need to unregister a DLL file. This process is sometimes necessary in the event of a malware infection or other type of problem. Unregistering a DLL file involves manual removal of the file from your PC’s registry.

Before you proceed, it is important to mention if you are unfamiliar with your PC’s registry and its functions, it is best to enlist the help of a knowledgeable PC technician before you proceed with the following method. That said the following method will help you resolve a DLL error in your PC.

To unregister a DLL file simply click on “Start” on the main toolbar of your desktop and then choose “Run” from the pop-up menu. You will need the name of the DLL file you want to unregister. When the command prompt window appears, simply type in “regsvr32 -u .dll” or “regsvr32 –u \.dll” The second version applies if you need the path name to the file and the filename is the name of the DLL file.

As an added note: If for any reason you need to re-register a DLL file, follow the same procedure as above except enter “regsvr32 .dll” in the Command Prompt box or enter “regsvr32 \.dll” if it is necessary to use the path name.

Restoring DLL Files

Your PC can develop many different types of DLL errors due to the excessive number of DLL files that are part of programs and applications in addition to operating system performance. The method which is used to fix a DLL error may vary depending upon the source of the problem. However there are basically two different types of DLL errors which include those that result from computer programs and applications and DLL errors that are the result of a malware infection.

In the event an error stems from a program or application, you can restore the DLL file by searching for updates and patches on the application which are provided by the manufacturer of the application. This typically can be accomplished by visiting the website of the application manufacturer. If this is not possible, you can restore the corrupt DLL file by performing a search online and then downloading the file online. Once you have downloaded the new DLL file you can register it in its proper location in the computer registry.

If the DLL error originates from a malware infection, you can unregister the DLL file from the PC registry however, it is not guaranteed that all of the malicious files will be out of the system. Some of the files are designed to hide deep within your operating system so the best thing to do is perform a complete anti-malware/antivirus scan and then run a registry cleaner to completely remove all of the malicious files.

Each year millions of PCs around the world are affected by hackers that are seeking to steal personal data, passwords, account information, and other data which is used for criminal intentions. As a PC user, the more you understand how hackers operate the better you can better protect critical data and your PC from attack. One of the biggest threats to your PC is known as a botnet.

Botnets Defined

A botnet is a group of computers which are chosen to perform criminal acts without the knowledge of the PC owner. PCs which are chosen for a botnet can be located anywhere in the world and are infected with malicious software which is inserted by the bot herder or leader of the botnet. The computers are infected through vulnerabilities in the operating system or Internet software such as ActiveX Controls, Java, browser vulnerabilities, and other types of software.

Once your PC is infected the bot herder takes control of the PC by using commands which perform criminal acts such as account security breaches, theft of critical information for exchange on the black market, and any other types of unscrupulous acts. These acts or often carried out on your PC without your knowledge.

Understanding Botnet Operation

Once your PC has been infected the malicious files can reside in your PC for a period of time before the bot herder initiates the criminal act. When the entire botnet is set up the botnet commands can be relayed to your PC via hidden relay channels or the malicious files can be programmed with a timer which will instruct your PC to carry out a certain task at a specific time. The PCs that have been recruited for the botnet can also be programmed to carry out criminal acts simultaneously.

Criminal acts which are committed using a botnet will vary according to the intentions of the bot herder. Some acts are committed by programmers which are funded by international groups to steal information for resale on the Internet black market, other acts are intended to crash networks, websites, and even an entire company depending upon the severity of the attack, and other attacks are by novices who simply enjoy the challenge of taking over someone’s computer.

How to Protect Your PC from a Botnet

Get in the habit of keeping your PC’s operating system and all software applications up to date with the latest security patches and definitions. This may require a time investment but it will prevent you from having to potentially replace your entire PC should a botnet attack occur.

Use a Security Strategy: Deploy a high quality antivirus program and anti-malware application which will help to act as a monitoring system. Additionally, you should implement a reputable firewall application that provides you with a way to control both inbound and outbound traffic to your PC when you connect to the Internet.

Set Up Automatic Updates: Once you have a solid security strategy in place, be sure to set the applications to automatically check for updates and new definitions. By taking the steps, you will increase your chances of being able to identify a breach in your PC before it is too late.

Educate Yourself: Consider seeking out additional education on how to safely navigate the Internet and to learn about some of the symptoms and behaviors your PC may exhibit when it is infected with malware.

Be Consistent with Security: Create a plan for a comprehensive security system that covers all bases for protection including your operating system, software, networking, online activity, intrusion detection, and Internet applications that you frequently use for personal or business purposes.

Use Caution with Networks: If you have a small network of PCs that you use for a home business or other purpose it is possible that one PC on the network may be chosen for use in a botnet. In this case you should have a backup plan if one of the computers on the network gets infected. The plan should include a way to isolate the infected computer for analysis to help you tighten network security in the future. Additionally, check the other PCs on the network for infection by running your security applications.

Eliminate Open PC Ports: Shut down any ports on your PC which are not being used to run programs or applications. Open PC ports that are not being used for a computing purpose are a prime target for bot herders because they represent the perfect doorway to insert malicious files.

Finally, use good common sense when it comes to clicking on links online. Think of surfing the Internet as using good street smarts as you do in the offline environment. You look both ways before you cross the street so you should do the same online. In addition to Internet street smarts, you should exercise caution when opening email attachments from unknown senders. Even if it looks like you know the sender you still have to be careful since hackers are good at making the email look like it came from someone on your contact list.

I am a gaming enthusiast and I have been searching for a machine to take my gamer side more seriously. I saw a couple of options that impressed me including the new release from Toshiba. That is the Toshiba Qosmio X870-143.

There are a couple of things that excite me about this gaming device. First is the sharp, crisp and bright screen which every gamer at any level would want to have. Next is the processor. I also liked the fact that it can function both as a powerful gaming machine and a replacement desktop device. However, there were also a few setbacks including the unimpressive battery life.

The Toshiba Qosmio X870-143 Design

Since I have no attachment whatsoever with the older Qosmio design, I have nothing to complain about this updated design. As a matter of fact, I like the bold but minimal fire red over the edge and through the keyboard and around the mouse pad. Just the sight of it makes me want to jump at it and start playing. The 17.3 inch screen offers a bright and crisp display providing nothing less than 1920 x 1080 resolution which is absolutely perfect high definition gaming and video playback.

And to complete the experience, the Harmon Kardon speakers are an absolute delight. It provides a blasting sound which is quite impressive for a laptop. It really gets a gamer into the game with the throbbing sounds coupled with the clear display. Trying my hands on it felt like I have been literally transported to the game.

The large keyboard and the huge track pad makes navigation easy and comfortable. The problem with the other gaming laptops I found is their rather cramped track pads. Also, the others weigh much too heavy for comfortably transporting the laptop. The Qosmio is no exception weighing at 3.4kg but it is still a little lighter than the other options including Asus and Alienware.

A downside to the Qosmio is the fact that it is only equipped with a regular DVD drive. I would have been jumping for joy if it has Blu-ray. Unfortunately, it isn’t the case. It is a disappointment and seems like a downgrade considering it has powerful audio and video features.

The Qosmio Processor

The Toshiba Qosmio X870-143 is built with a dual-core i5 processor. It has an 8GB memory with 1TB of hybrid drive coupled with 8GB small but solid-state module. Technically, with all the releases today in gaming machines, I can probably do better than settle for the rather modest processor. However, I also commend that Qosmio provides good support for it included the graphics card, GeForce GTX 670M which includes 3GB in video memory. Overall, such combination does yield decent results.

The Qosmio Battery Life

For something solidly built though, I am quite unimpressed with how limited the battery life is. If the Qosmio is run with the GeForce graphics card, the gaming machine can only last for an estimated 2 hours and 40 mins on battery. So, what if I get into the game, it would be a buzzkill if the laptop dies on me. The most sensible option is to connect it to a power outlet and that is not such a big deal for me but may be for others.

Without the GeForce graphics card, Qosmio may last a few hours more. Switching to the Intel HD 4000 graphics is recommended if Qosmio is to be used for regular web browsing or other tasks you may find it useful for.

Putting the Qosmio to Test

Hard Reset plays well in the Qosmio at 1920×1080 resolution. It provides such a high quality setting. And the same goes with the Stalker. However, I tried the Batman: Arkham City on it too. Quality is still good as it can play with the same resolution at 27fps but there’s a clear sign of a little difficulty on the Qosmio’s part. It can be adjusted to a medium quality, though with a resolution of 1280×720 with 40fps.

The Decision

The Toshiba Qosmio X870-143 may disappoint the hard-core and power hungry gamers out there. But as a casual player, I find it adequate. Sure, there are some things that Toshiba could have done better to make this gaming device stand out more but I think there are other models for that such as the X870-11R model with a much powerful processor of quad-core i7 at 2.3 GHz. But as for me, X870-143 may just be what I need.

Author: Ronald Stem is a great fan of gadgets and gaming. He does not consider himself a power hungry gamer but he does understand what real and serious gamers look for in terms of their machines. He makes an effort to offer his honest opinions about what is available in gaming devices.

The release of Windows 8 is one of the most anticipated events in computing history. Some say it’s the tiles, some are just too excited with the touch-screen innovation, while the rest are anxious about a whole lot of new experiences. What is really special with Windows 8?

Some New Experiences to Offer

It is quite obvious that Windows 8 is more personalized than ever. Hence, the tagline – “the Start screen is all you”. A personalized experience is definitely an excellent selling point for an operating system. When user experience is highly personalized, consumers think and feel that their preferences and comfort were factored into the design. However, it’s got to be more than just the user experience.

What about the tiles? Well, the tiles are really neat and personalized. The tiles in the Start screen showcase the user’s preferences from applications to people to playlist, websites and more. This is really cool.

The screen of Windows 8 has come alive. The tiles teem with dynamism as users are presented with breaking news, status updates from your favorite social networking sites. All these happen even before you can think of opening an application. Your operating system (OS) has not been as animated as Window’s 8. However, your personal settings are actually defining the kind of experience that you prefer from Windows 8.

Your Internet surfing also benefits much from Windows 8. Never again will the priority project you are collaborating on with your staff via cloud computing be interrupted when you feel like commenting on a friend’s status. You can easily share candid photos you took of yourself while making a wacky face, via Facebook or your favorite social network. Multi-tasking has never been as easy as swiping from the right of the screen and clicking the share button.

The touch is an ultimate human experience. Windows 8 ingeniously designed their new OS to facilitate human-to-computer interfacing by the touch screen technology. The good news is, Microsoft is offering this unparalleled experience not just to notebooks, laptops, and but also to desktops.

Imagine pinching and stretching to zoom in and out of the screen. Then try swiping from the left to change applications. This is touch-screen technology at its best and you can enjoy the experience in your desktop, subject to some compatibility issues and configurations. Moreover, moving around your computer has never been this easy. You practically have everything at your fingertips.

Does this mean goodbye to the mouse and the keyboard? Not necessarily so. With the Windows 8 operating system , consumers are being offered new and better experiences, but your preferences are always yours to keep. If you feel more comfortable with the good old keyboard or the mouse, you are given a freehand to use whichever of the older and newer input processes you prefer.

If Case You Decide to Shift to Windows 8 …

Windows 8 is equipped with an Upgrade Assistant which will help new users evaluate their PC’s readiness for the new OS experience. The Upgrade Assistant has a utility which can generate a compatibility report. Should your unit be assessed as ready for Windows 8, the Upgrade Assistant can guide you through the installation procedure.

The easiest platform to upgrade is Windows 7 where applications, files, and settings of your PC can be easily migrated to Windows 8. However, for computer units running the Windows Vista or the older Windows XP platform, a Windows 8 upgrade will mean you need to reinstall your favorite applications. A word of caution though, some touch-screen features of Windows 8 may not be compatible with older PC models. Thus, if you want to live and enjoy the new experience, you may need to buy a new PC.

Is the Windows 8 Magic Affordable?

Of course, it is. The upgrade for Windows 8 or Window 8 Pro is not expensive. In fact, for a limited time, the upgrade download is being offered at a discounted price. You also have the option of downloading the upgrade or having the upgrade shipped to you in optical media.

Are you still wondering what is special with Windows 8? Nothing beats an operating system which was conceptualized and designed with the most special people in mind – you. Windows 8 is, indeed, special, because you are very special.

Microsoft and Apple are definitely the two giants when it comes to computers. Although Apple has also paved their way in other electronics such as mobile phones and music players, their Mac continues to be a powerful competition for the older Microsoft Windows. The question is: what makes the two different and what is better? For those who are currently thinking about buying one or making a computer switch, here’s a comprehensive breakdown of Microsoft vs. Apple.

Operating System

The most obvious difference between the two is their operating system. Apple operates using Mac OS while Microsoft runs under the more familiar Windows. Both brands update their operating systems on a regular basis, ensuring that each one is the best the tech-giants have to offer. Another difference is the types of OS made available. Windows will usually have different versions of their latest OS such as Windows 8 Home Basic or Windows 8 Ultimate. Different versions come with different features that fit their intended usage. Apple however provides an all-in-one operating system. This means that users can purchase just one type of the latest OS and all the necessary features are already included in it.

Software Formats

Software format for Microsoft and Apple are completely different, making it hard to open a Microsoft file in an Apple computer. Even worse, the two aren’t interchangeable so conversion is really necessary if users want to start opening a Windows file in a Mac OS or vice versa. The advantage here seems to go to Windows as most companies are used to Microsoft and have configured their software to be compatible with the operating system. Hence, it’s usually easier for Windows users to install new programs in their computer and allow them to run without any interference. Companies are also creating Apple-friendly software but not of the same extent as Windows.

Hardware Concept

Another interesting thing to note when it comes to Microsoft vs. Apple is the hardware. See, Apple is basically a two-in-one provider. This means that the computer and operating software are both manufactured by them. The same cannot be said for Microsoft. This is because Microsoft is mostly concerned with software distribution and leaves the hardware manufacturing to other brands such as Asus, Dell, Acer, Samsung and more. This is actually advantageous for Microsoft. By concentrating on the software distribution instead of the hardware, they provide buyers with different options to utilize their products, allowing for more flexibility.

Outside Hardware, Accessories and Devices

When it comes to accessories, Microsoft and Apple are at par. Although Apple manufactures the laptop that goes with their Mac OS, they do allow different companies to create Apple-compatible accessories such as mouse and keyboards. Microsoft on the other hand has always had this feature, making it the mainstream computer for most homes.

User Friendly

The ease of using Microsoft and Apple are practically at par with each other. It’s true that individuals who find themselves using Microsoft/Apple for the first time may flounder a bit, but they will definitely get the hang of it sooner or later.

Reliability

When it comes to reliability, Apple beats Microsoft hands down. Studies show that Apple is less prone to freezing and have no problem accommodating multiple tasks that could cause Microsoft to freeze up. Hacking and virus attacks today are mostly adapted to work on Microsoft, making users more vulnerable to cyber intruders.

OS and Accessories Cost

There’s no arguing on this one, Apple is definitely pricier than Microsoft not just with their main OS but also with the accessories manufactured by the company. Individuals who want to do some saving should skip Apple and go for the more pocket-friendly Microsoft.

To wrap it up, both Microsoft and Apple carry their own perks and drawbacks, depending on how the buyer intends to use the product. Since each have their own pros and cons, personal preferences will ultimately decide which products are bought. One thing to remember before buying is how the product will be used. Since about 90% of the population today is using Microsoft, it might be necessary to choose the latter when aiming for compatibility. For those who are utilizing their computer for personal leisure however, an Apple will be a much better choice.

It can be really frustrating to prepare to use your laptop PC only to discover you are unable to connect to the Internet to proceed with your daily tasks. Even if you know you are within proper range of the WiFi access point, the page in your browser is still blank when you try to access the Internet.

The best place to start troubleshooting is to approach the issue is through process of elimination, beginning with the most obvious fixes first. The first steps can appear to be embarrassing but nevertheless it still happens to the most tech savvy of people.

Initial Basic Troubleshooting

The best place to start troubleshooting WiFi is to shut down you laptop PC, remove the battery, and then unplug the AC cable, provided you have your PC plugged into an AC outlet. Wait at least 20 seconds before you replace the battery, then reconnect the AC cable and start up your PC. As soon as your PC is fully booted, open you browser and try to access a web page.

If you are still having problems check the WiFi switch on the side of your laptop to make sure it is activated. Sometimes from handling your laptop the switch can easily slide over to the Off position without your knowledge. Also, check to see if your router is switched on as the same type of activity can happen here too.

You can also try checking the firewall setting to ensure it is not blocking your connection to the Internet. Depending upon how high you have the security settings configured, it may prevent you from accessing the Internet. Although it is not wise to disable the firewall altogether, you can first try restoring it to the default settings to see if it will connect to the Internet.

If you are using the firewall which is included with your antivirus program, it will be necessary to check the help section for the program to learn how to access the firewall settings. On the other hand, if you are using Windows firewall, you can access the firewall settings by clicking on Start and then choosing Control Panel. Click on System Security to check the status of the firewall.

Test Your Laptop

To determine whether or not the problem is with your laptop or your wireless connection, try to find a wireless access point you know others are using with success. If you are unable to connect to the network, then there may a problem with your network adapter in your laptop PC. To check the status of your network adapter, click on Start and then choose Control Panel from the menu. In the Control Panel window click on Network and Internet and then choose Hardware and Sound. Click on Device Manager and then scroll down the list of devices to the Network Adapter. Right click on the devices in this category and then choose Update Driver from the submenu. If there is a driver update available, Windows will automatically update the driver for you.

Use an Ethernet Cable

If you are trying to connect to the Internet using your home wireless router, try connecting to the router directly using an Ethernet cable. This is typically a blue cable that resembles a telephone connection cable. Simply plug one end of the cable into your laptop PC and the other into the Ethernet port on the side of the router. If you can connect to the Internet then there may be a problem with your wireless connection. On the other hand, if you cannot connect to the Internet your broadband modem may not be receiving a signal from your Internet Service Provider. In this case, you will need to contact your ISP to resolve the issue.

Intermittent Connectivity

If the wireless connection appears to be intermittent, then the issue is somewhere in your broadband infrastructure. First, make sure that there are no metal objects or wires from other household objects interfering with the wireless signal. Then try moving to the same room as the wireless router to see if you can achieve a more reliable connection to the Internet.

If this solves the issue, the problem may be with signal strength. In this case, try moving the router to a centralized location where it is not obstructed by walls and other interferences. You can also choose to purchase a second router to help improve the wireless signal.

It is also important to mention if you router is an older piece of equipment it may be time to upgrade in order to handle the new wireless standards of 802.11g or 802.11n. Although most routers are considered to be backwards compatible, this is not always the case when you go to apply this practice.

Return to the Router Default Settings

Finally, you can try setting your router back to the default settings when you first purchased the device. This can be done by typing the IP address included in the manual for your router into the address bar of your browser, entering your username and password, and then using the interface to change the settings back to default. Once you have completed the process, shut down and restart the router and then try to connect to the Internet.

These are a few of the basic troubleshooting methods you can try on your own without having to enlist the help of a networking technician. If you are still having issues with your wireless connection there are several advanced steps you can take to try and resolve the problem. In this case, you should ask for assistance from an experienced technician to help you with advanced troubleshooting steps.

Deploying a good registry cleaner is essential to the proper functioning of your PC. The registry is the location in the Microsoft Windows operating system that stores important configurations that are responsible for the proper functioning of all software installations. It is basically a main database in the operating system that stores information such as program settings and files that play an important role in running the software programs on your PC.

Over a period of time and through normal computer use the files in the registry can become fragmented and broken. The registry also gets filled with a lot of unnecessary files that appear from uninstalling software programs. The files take up space on your hard drive and over time they build up in the registry and cause a variety of problems with your PC’s operating system.

A registry that is not well maintained will cause problems that can range from errors when running software applications to slow performance of the operating system. The problems can even go as far as your operating system crashing altogether. This is why it is important to deploy a reputable registry cleaner.

Why You Should Use a Registry Cleaner

There are numerous benefits to using a registry cleaner.

Repair Hidden Problems: A quality registry cleaner will detect and repair problems on your PC that have gone unnoticed by your antivirus or anti-malware programs. While these programs are essential to have, it is still possible for a virus or malware to slip by and hide within your PC’s registry due to the number of new types of malicious programs that are generated on a daily basis.

Speed Up Performance: You may notice that the performance of your PC is not as efficient as when you first purchased it. This is due to fragmented and broken files that have appeared in your PC’s registry as the result of installing and uninstalling programs and general PC use. Keeping the registry clean will eliminate fragmented files and ensure that your PC runs at optimum speed and efficiency.

Eliminate Errors: If your PC is prone to producing error messages when you try to install software or access applications on the Internet, this is due to invalid entries in your PC’s registry that manifest themselves by integrating with other fragmented and broken files in your registry. Using a quality registry cleaner will prevent this from happening and eliminate the headaches of error messages when using and installing applications on your PC.

Eliminate Freeze Ups: By using a quality registry cleaner you will be free of computer system freeze ups and crashes because all of the files and configurations will be kept in proper working order.

How to Choose a Good Registry Cleaner

When you search for a registry cleaner online you will find an overwhelming amount of resources and software, some of which are very high quality and others which are inferior and may end up causing damage to your PC. Choosing a trustworthy registry cleaner is very important since the registry is the heart of your entire operating system. Here are a few tips on choosing a dependable registry cleaner.

Backup Ability: Dependable and high performance registry cleaners are capable of backing up your PC’s registry. This action is extremely important should something go wrong during the registry cleaning process. The ability to backup your registry should be an automatic process prior to using the cleaner. Effective backups provide you with the piece of mind that you can restore your PC back to its original state in the event of a problem.

Ease of Use: A trustworthy and quality registry cleaner should be easy to use to prevent you from causing further damage to your PC. If the registry cleaner is filled with technical jargon you run a higher risk of making a mistake which could potentially render your PC useless. A quality registry cleaner will be straightforward and contain step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow.

Ability to Identify Unnecessary Files: Some registry cleaners which are inferior are not adept at properly identifying unnecessary files such as files that are fragmented, corrupt, or broken. The registry cleaner you choose should be able to accurately identify and remove unnecessary files without interfering with other important files in your PC’s registry.

In-Depth Scanning: Just about all registry cleaners contain a scanner however it is the quality of scanner performance that distinguishes a dependable registry cleaner from an inferior one. A registry cleaner with an in-depth scanner will be able to find malicious files which may be hiding deep in your PC’s registry without your knowledge. These are files related to rootkits and other types of malicious software that occasionally slip by your antivirus and anti-malware programs and are difficult to detect.

Comprehensive Reporting: A quality registry cleaner will keep you updated on the status of the cleaning process and provide you with choices on different actions to be taken with the registry cleaning process. You should be able to see the complete status of your PC’s health along with a detailed report on the events of each registry cleaning session.

Technical Support: Dependable and quality registry cleaners should offer expert tech support if you experience problems with software functions or something unexplained occurs during the cleaning process. The tech support specialist should respond within a reasonable period of time as opposed to having to wait for days until you can receive assistance.

Registry cleaning is not something to be taken lightly. So before you decide to clean your PC’s registry invest the time to do your homework. It is time well spent.

If you have started to notice your PC is not performing in the same way it did when you first purchased it, the problem may be with the amount of memory which is left in your PC. Your PC’s memory is a form of temporary electronic storage which prevents your computer’s Central Processing Unit from having to constantly retrieve data from the hard drive. This is what helps to maintain the speed of your PC.

Over a period of time and as a result of accessing applications and installing programs, your PC’s memory will become low which causes your computer’s performance to slow down. This is where a simple memory upgrade can restore life to your PC. It is easy to do as long as your PC permits memory upgrades and prevents you from having to purchase an entirely new machine. Here are a few non-tech savvy tips to help you get started with upgrading your PC’s memory.

How to Upgrade Your PC’s Memory

Upgrading the memory in your computer means that you must increase the random Access Memory also known as RAM. Not all memory is the same in every computer so the first thing you need to do is find out the type of RAM your system uses as well as the number of slots in the motherboard that are being used to transmit data. Although this sounds complicated, don’t worry because it is not difficult.

Check the Manual: You can find out what RAM configuration your computer uses by checking your computer manual, the manual for the motherboard, or visiting the website for the company that manufactured your computer.

Speed of PC Memory: Find out the speed of your PC’s memory because this is important information that will determine which upgrade is appropriate for your computer system. You can determine memory speed by right clicking on My Computer and then choosing Properties from the drop down menu. From there you should be able to see the type and speed of memory which is installed on your PC.

Different Types of Computer Memory Upgrade

Before you consider purchasing additional RAM it is important to be aware that there are two different types of memory upgrades available:

System Specific: RAM upgrades that are system specific mean that the upgrade is designed especially for your brand of PC such as Dell or Sony. You should also check the model number as many computer manufacturers produce different grades of computers under the same model.

Generic: A generic upgrade is a memory upgrade that is not specifically designed for your computer and will work in more than one brand of computer. A generic memory upgrade will work on any PC that allows memory upgrades to be installed however, it is important to make sure that your brand of PC will accept a generic RAM upgrade.

Before deciding on whether you should go with system specific or branded, find out what type of memory card is installed on your PC. You can find this information in the User Manual that came with your PC. You will find that there is a variety of memory types available for your PC depending on the age of your computer. Once you find out what type of memory card is being used, then you can decide on a system specific or generic upgrade.

Installing Computer Memory Upgrade

Once you determine the type of memory card that is needed to upgrade your computer, installation is relatively simple to accomplish. For this example we will assume you are using a desktop model PC. Before you begin it is important to mention you should wear rubber rings on your wrists to prevent any static electricity from causing damage to your PC. This is especially important if your PC is in a room that has carpeting installed.

Open the Side Panel of the Console: On the top right hand side of the motherboard you should see two to four long thin memory slots. Remove the old modules by pushing the clips outward and popping the module out of the slot. Repeat this process until you have enough slots to install your memory upgrade.

Replace Module: Before inserting the new modules, take careful notice of the direction of the contacts and the way they are inserted. Usually there are two thin lines running down in between plastic separations. Simply align the new module with these slots and snap into place. That’s it.

The instructions here are to give you a general idea of how to perform a computer memory upgrade. We also recommend getting instructions that are specific to your particular brand of PC and hard drive.
